Platelet Rich Plasma in Melbourne

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma has been used clinically for more than 10 years and its safety and efficacy is well documented. Platelets are cells that are a part of your blood and work hard for your body to promote healing and clotting. Platelets provide essential growth factors that are vital for stem cell migration, differentiation, proliferation and the stimulation of cells to induce new extracellular matrix deposition and neo-vascularation. Plasma contains many factors essential for cell survival such as nutrients, vitamins, hormones, electrolytes and proteins.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of your own blood that contains high numbers of platelets that can be injected back into the body to promote skin rejuvenation. PRP is a very safe form of skin rejuvenation as it is simply the process of re-injecting part of your own blood. As it is your own, the process can not cause hypersensitivities or allergic reactions and the risk of infection is significantly reduced.

What does a Platelet Rich Plasma treatment involve?

The process of preparing the PRP for injection is quick and simple. It involves withdrawing blood from the patient in the usual manner, separating the PRP from the whole blood using a centrifuge, and then re-injecting the PRP into the treatment area, i.e. the face. Multiple tiny injections are used to re-inject the PRP which may cause minor bruising immediately post treatment. The Skin Centre uses anaesthetic creams and injections to eliminate any discomfort during the re-injecting process.

How do Platelet Rich Plasma injections improve my skin?

PRP has such a positive effect on the skin because it has approximately 4 to 7 times the normal concentration platelets than in whole blood. Whole blood usually contains about 6% platelets, PRP contains 95%. This high concentration of platelets increases the amount of growth factors delivered to the injected area causing a stimulation of collagen production.

PRP is also the ideal treatment to use in conjunction with the Dermapen and Dermal Fillers to increase healing time and accelerate results.
