Dr Wendy Schaffer Psychologist MAPS, MCEDP
Wendy, a highly trained clinical psychologist, with over 30 years experience, is able to consult and counsel a wide variety of patients.
She works with individuals, families and groups on a range of issues including anxiety, depression, self-improvement and well being, relationship difficulties, parenting, trauma, PTSD, grief & loss, anger, drug abuse, pain and stress management.
Initially a graduate of the University of Natal in South African, she completed a Psychology Degree with Honours at the University of Newcastle NSW. More recently, Wendy was awarded a Commonwealth Research Scholarship to complete her PhD at La Trobe University.
Wendy is able to discern the best method of counseling for each individual, and is able to use variety of evidence-based strategies including in cognitive- behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness, interpersonal therapy or hypnosis. She is also able to work with individuals or groups with psychoanalytic therapy.
Wendy is a registered and endorsed Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). She is a graduate of the University of Natal training in Remedial Education and provided therapy to children bedridden in hospital. She was a student of UNISA and after completing her Honors in Psychology at the University of Newcastle was awarded a Commonwealth Research Scholarship and completed her PhD at La Trobe University with an NH&MRC grant. She studied hypnosis with the Australian Society of Hypnosis and did training in Family Therapy at the Bouverie Clinic. She is a full member of the Australian Psychological Society, practicing as a Registered Psychologist for over 30 years.
Wendy has broad and diverse areas of expertise, serving in the public hospital system for over 26 years, working clinically providing treatment for patients with addictive disorders.
As an educational and developmental psychologist, Wendy focuses on how people develop and learn throughout their lifetime. She works with individuals, families and groups on a range of issues including anxiety, depression, self- improvement and well being, relationship difficulties, parenting, trauma/PTSD, grief & loss, anger, drug abuse and pain/stress management. She utilizes a variety of evidence-based strategies including in cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness based interventions, interpersonal therapy and group focused psychological interventions.
Also working in private practice as a group analyst and individual psychoanalytic psychotherapist.
