HOW DOES TATTOO REMOVAL WORK?
Q-switched lasers are currently the most effective means to fade and remove tattoos. Q-switched laser have the ability to deliver high levels of power into the skin in a fraction of a second, shattering the ink into particles that can be removed by the body’s own immune system. Q-switched lasers treat tattoos with the lowest chance of scarring, in comparison to other tattoo removal methods. This is due to the skin only being exposed to the laser energy for a short period of time, therefore decreasing the chance of skin damage due to excessive heat exposure.
The Skin Centre has the Medlite C6 q-switched laser that is ideal for treating dark blues, reds and orange, but most effectively black. Q-switched lasers strongly rely on the wavelength of the laser being highly attracted to the pigment in the tattoo ink, and different laser wavelengths are attracted to different colours.
The Skin Centre uses the most up-to-date laser technology for the removal of tattoos. The Medlite C6 laser is known as the ‘workhorse’ of aesthetic lasers, with its unmatched precision beam technology. Our highly trained and experienced nurses can perform treatments knowing that results are consistent, with fewer complications than other tattoo removal devices.
BOOKING AN APPOINTMENT TO DISCUSS TATTOO REMOVAL
Before having treatment to your tattoo it is important to have a thorough initial consultation with our cosmetic nurse. During the initial consult the nurse will collect information about your medical history, and also important information about your tattoo, i.e. is it a professional tattoo? How long have you had the tattoo? Do you want it faded to cover it, or completely removed? The collection of this information will provide the nurse with the data needed to give realistic expectations as to the number of treatments required and expected results. BEFORE YOUR TATTOO REMOVAL APPOINTMENT
Our nurse will give you clear instructions on how to prepare for your laser treatment. However, if you have had recent sun or solarium exposure, or are particularly tanned your laser session may need to be postponed as this may put your skin at increased risk of complications and subsequent scarring.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON THE DAY OF MY TATTOO REMOVAL TREATMENT?
Prior to laser treatment of a tattoo, local anaesthetic creams or injections are used. This will deem the treatment virtually pain free. The treatment is very fast, so if you do feel discomfort, it will be very brief.
After the treatment, a topical antiseptic cream (usually bepanthen) and a water-proof dressing will be applied to the treated area and should be left in place for 24 – 48 hours.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY TATTOO REMOVAL TREATMENT?
Once your dressing has been removed, you will need to continue to use the topical antiseptic cream until the wound has completely healed. You will find that there is a layer of crust that forms over the tattoo. It can take up to 2 weeks to fully heal and during this time is it very important that it is not exposed to the sun or excessive heat.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Laser treatment of tattoos can be used to completely remove tattoos or fade them for future correction or cover up. Usually, about 10 – 20 treatments with the Medlite laser are required to completely remove a professional tattoo. Fewer treatments are needed for the removal of amateur tattoos or to fade a tattoo.
TIME BETWEEN TREATMENTS
It can take 4 – 6 weeks for the body to remove the shattered ink particles from the area, in some people it may be slightly longer. We recommend that treatments are spaced at 10 – 12 week intervals. By having treatments closer together it will not remove the tattoo any faster, but will increase the chance of complications.
WILL I BE LEFT WITH A SCAR?
As with all laser treatments there is a slight chance that you may get a scar. Scarring is uncommon but also avoidable. Scars can be avoided by providing a full and correct medical history at the initial consultation, strictly following after care advice, and avoiding exposure to the sun.
