At least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70!! Skin cancers account for approximately 80% of all cancers diagnosed in Australia!!!
Melanoma is the most diagnosed cancer each year for people aged 15-44 years old (Cancer Council Victoria)

The three common types of skin cancer that can be cured

There are three common types of skin cancer, Melanoma, Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). If diagnosed and treated early a large majority of Melanoma, SCC ad BCC can be cured. It is important to get to know your skin and what is normakl for you so changes will be quickly noticed.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and may appear without warning. Melanoma can occur anywhere on the skin, even the soles of the feet. Melanoma can spread very quickly and once it penetrates below the surface of the skin it can be deadly. Early detection of Melanoma is therefor paramount in successfully treating the cancer.

Causes of skin cancer

Sunshine and light are good for us and we need it to produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D forms in the skin when it is exposed to UV radiation from sunlight. We need Vitamin D to maintain good health, in particular to keep our bones and muscles strong and healthy.

However too much sun can be DANGEROUS!! Over exposeure to UV radiation permanently damages the DNA in our skin cells and this damage continues to worsen over time, causing the various skin cancers to form.

How can I be certain?

A melanoma changes its appearance quickly so how do we know when such changes have occurred?

A major technological advancement in melanoma detection, the MoleMax© system is now available at Main Street Medical and Skin Centre and may help alleviate your concerns.

Tell me more about the MoleMax© system

The MoleMax© system, the very first of its kind, was developed in Austria in 1997. It enables your doctor to examine the skin beyond its surface layers and setect changes to your skin not visible to the human eye.

Full HD, photographic imaging of any lesion, up to 60X magnification is displayed on a computer screen. this makes diagnosis much easier for your doctor and enhances the chances of early detection of a malignant melanoma or any skin cancer. The image is stored confidentially in your patient file for the purpose of future reference. Comparison checks, at a later stage can reveal changes which can be very helpful in deciding if that suspicious lesion needs to be removed.
This quick and non-invasive examination is not only painless but also allows patients to observe their lesions on the screen while their doctor is diagnosing them.

There are three steps that MoleMax© provides to detect skin cancers

MoleMax© Scanning

This technique combines high magnification and high light intensity to penetrate the first layer of skin to see diagnostic features of moles that can not be seen with the naked eye. This is a much more accurate technique than relying on a solely naked eye exam alone.

Sequential Monitoring

The most significant fact in successfully treating Melanoma and other skin cancers is early detection. Sequential monitoring allows your doctor to compare lesions and allows for new moles to be photographed and monitored.

Total Body Photography

The use of total body photography creates a baseline of your skin and therefore helps doctors identify both new and changing lesions that might indicate melanoma skin cancer. No oil is required so a clean and comfortable examination is performed.
